Last fall, kids from across the Treasure Valley packed their school bags with their lunches and permission slips and headed out for a fun, educational day on the mountain during Bogus Basin’s Fall Field Trip program. Led by the Bogus Basin Environmental Education Team, each group received a specially designed lesson tailored to their curriculum and time of year.

Your Mountain, Your Kids, Their Education

Fall 2024 Field Trips – Bringing the Classroom to the Mountain

Between the months of August and October, kids ages K-12 met the Environmental Education team at the Frontier Point Lodge for a day of learning in nature. Last fall, students got their hands dirty learning about the unique mountain environment, right in their backyard. Environmental Educators covered a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Watershed Science
  • Local Flora and Fauna
  • Forest Ecology
  • Wilderness Survival
  • Habitat Restoration

These sessions encouraged students to engage with their local environment, have fun outside, and develop a deeper passion for Idaho’s great outdoors – talk about the best classroom ever!

Bringing the mountain to the classroom

Off the mountain, the Environmental Education team visited local classrooms, teaching students about Idaho’s ecology. We also launched online field guides to help users identify native and invasive plant species — offering an accessible way for anyone to explore and understand the ecosystems that make Idaho so special.

We called, and the Treasure Valley’s schools answered! Fall Field Trip program availability filled in less than a week last year. We are excited to build on the program’s success, with plans to expand opportunities for young Idahoans to explore and learn from their backyard non-profit mountain recreation area in the coming years.

If you’re interested in supporting local programs for the Treasure Valley’s youth, consider making a donation to Bogus Basin during our Annual Appeal this fall.
